Why We Also Look at Feeding During a Sleep Intake

As a holistic baby sleep coach with a medical background, sleep is never viewed in isolation. Feeding  for example, can play a significant role in how well a baby rests. Here’s why we always review nutrition during intake:

1️⃣ Food Sensitivities & Allergies
Undiagnosed intolerances can cause discomfort, reflux, gas and eczema. All of those influence the sleep quality and often lead to frequent night waking. They need to be recognized, addressed and solved if you want to work on sleep quality.

2️⃣ Milk Intake & Caloric Balance
Too little intake can lead to genuine hunger overnight And especially young babies have a tiny stomach and need frequent small feedings. But we need to realize that this ‘need’ changes with the age of the baby. At some point a night feed is only routine and habit and a large feed with the intention to try make your baby sleep longer, can  even disrupt natural sleep rhythms and force the body to be busy with digestion instead of deep repair and quality sleep. Next to that an overfull stomach can cause discomfort and make it harder to fall asleep. It can also have a effect when older on the eating pattern . (eating for soothing <-> eating only when feeling hungry)

3️⃣ Feeding Schedule & Timing
Clustered or inconsistent feeds can impact naps, bedtime settling, and night sleep. You can not always just look up a sleep schedule and follow that. Each baby has its differences in habits and feeds and sleep advice should be individualized for your baby and your family

4️⃣ Breast or Bottle Dynamics
Latch quality, bottle type, and milk flow matter.
Excess air intake can cause stomach discomfort, leading to unsettled sleep.

5️⃣ Digestive Comfort
Reflux, trapped wind, or constipation often show up as “sleep problems” when they’re actually feeding-related. So checking how a baby does when feeding and the hours after a feed is very valuable information for a sleep coach that wants to really support your baby and family  in the best possible way and not just provide you with schedules that you can find everywhere.

Sleep and nutrition are deeply connected. As holistic babysleep coach nutrition is only one of the many things we take into consideration when creating an individualized sleep plan.
When we support the whole picture, we create lasting, gentle improvements that are a perfect fit for your baby, for your family 🤍
