Is your baby struggling with cramps or gas?
You’re not alone — it’s incredibly common, and yes, it can be tough for both baby and parent.
The good news?
There are often simple causes… and gentle solutions.
Check the tips for:
• What causes baby cramps
• What you can do to help
• What to avoid
TIP1 – Swallowed Air
Air is often the main culprit
Babies can swallow air when:
– Latching poorly at the breast
– Bottle feeding without a proper seal
– Drinking too fast or too eagerly
– Crying for longer periods
What helps?
– Ensure a deep latch during feeding
– Choose bottles with anti-colic design and make sure baby doesn’t swallow air
– Keep baby upright after feeding
– hold baby briefly on the left side in your arms – this helps trapped air escape more easily
TIP 2 – Immature Digestive System
Your baby’s digestive system is still developing
Sudden changes (like switching formula or introducing solids too early) can cause discomfort.
Even some “natural” remedies marketed for babies can be too harsh for tiny tummies.
Tips:
👉 Stick to milk only for babies younger then 6 months (especially during the first 4 months)
👉 Only change formula when it’s truly necessary
💬 TIP 3 – Not Enough Movement
Movement helps digestion
Since babies lie down most of the day, their digestive system can use some support.
Try this:
– Hold baby upright regularly
– Gently “bicycle” their legs 🚲
– Light tummy massage (not directly after a feeding!)
TIP 4 – Intolerances & Allergies
Food intolerances or allergies can lead to gas, bloating, and cramps.
If you suspect a reaction to formula or breastmilk content, talk to your doctor or midwife. Sometimes when breastfeeding mom needs to make some adjustments too.
💬 TIP 5 – Imbalanced Gut Flora
Gut flora might be off balance
This can happen if mom had antibiotics during pregnancy or birth, or after a C-section. If mom has gut issues the baby will possibly get most of that gut flora also. Optimizing can be necessary. For baby and mom.
A baby-safe probiotic (always under guidance) can support gut health and ease digestion. The things mom eat have an influence on her gut flora hence also influence the pregnancy and is what baby comes in contact with first during and after birth.
